Leaders of Columbia Engineering visit ShanghaiTech

On May 23, Shih-Fu Chang, Dean of Columbia Engineering, along with Helen Haiyan Lu, Senior Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs and Advancement, and Keely Henderson, Senior Associate Dean of Advancement, visited ShanghaiTech University. They were accompanied by Cheng Yan Davis, President of the Forum for World Education (FWE). ShanghaiTech President Jiang Mianheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation. Yin Jie, Executive Vice President and Provost, Jiang Ge, Vice President, as well as heads of relevant schools, institutes, and offices also attended the meeting.


Shih-Fu Chang first gave a detailed introduction to Columbia Engineering, including its vision, faculty and students, discipline layout, renowned alumni, and future plans. He mentioned that there are many similarities between Columbia Engineering and ShanghaiTech University in terms of scale and development vision. Following the introduction, the two sides had lively discussions on topics such as student cultivation, faculty recruitment and training, interdisciplinary research, and entrepreneurial education. President Jiang said the valuable experience shared by the delegation was instructive for the engineering education at ShanghaiTech, and he looked forward to establishing cooperation with Columbia Engineering in the future. Shih-Fu Chang agreed and suggested that both sides could initiate cooperation in the joint training of students.

Before the meeting, Liu Zhi, Vice Dean of SPST, led the guests to visit the SHINE facility and Laboratory for Topological Physics at SPST. Yu Jingyi, Executive Dean of SIST, showed them around the Multi-disciplinary Artificial Reality Studio (MARS) at SIST. The delegation enjoyed the vivid demonstrations and was impressed by the wide applications of AI, VR and computational imaging technologies in real life. The guests then toured BME, SLST, SIAIS, iHuman Institute, and Shanghai Clinical Research and Trial Center.
