On October 22, the construction project of the Shanghai Clinical Research and Trial Center received the Notice of Completion Acceptance for Construction Works issued by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, marking the end of all construction and acceptance procedures and the start of the operational preparation phase.

Established with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the Center is a research hospital under the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health, constructed and managed by ShanghaiTech University. With a total floor area of 136,000 square meters, the project comprises an outpatient building, a comprehensive building and an inpatient building. It will serve as a platform supporting clinical medical innovation and research translation.

The comprehensive acceptance was jointly carried out by municipal and district authorities, each performing itemized inspections against applicable codes and standards. The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Shanghai Construction Engineering Safety and Quality Supervision Station reviewed overall building quality and fire protection systems; Pudong’s construction and civil air defense authorities completed special acceptance of civil air defense facilities; the Office for Construction and Management of Shanghai Zhangjiang Science City verified parking, sanitation and greening works; while the Pudong health authority and the traffic police of the Pudong Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau reviewed healthcare‑specific requirements and traffic arrangements. All special assessments met regulatory requirements following on‑site inspections and online approval workflows.

Throughout construction, the project team tackled challenges such as the large scale, complex cross‑disciplinary interfaces and stringent acceptance standards. Through lean construction and digital management, the project has earned multiple municipal honors, including the Shanghai Civilized Construction Site, a Class I Green Construction Project, the Shanghai High‑Quality Structural Engineering Award, the top prize of the Shanghai “Golden Steel Award,” and the Shanghai High‑Quality Installation Engineering Award. In the final run‑up to acceptance, participating parties aligned schedules and coordinated closely with the authorities to complete rectification and inspection preparations.

With acceptance now complete, the Center will advance its operational preparation. Leveraging the research strengths of ShanghaiTech University, it will integrate clinical practice with basic research, progressively roll out its full functions, and support the innovative development of biomedicine in Shanghai.
