Laboratory for Disease Research

The Laboratory for Disease Research is dedicated to translating basic scientific discoveries into improved clinical diagnosis and treatment. Focused on addressing critical challenges in major diseases, we are driven by collaborative partnerships and technological innovation. Our goal is to build a pioneering platform that seamlessly integrates clinical research with translational medicine.

-Clinically Oriented: We begin with unmet clinical needs, extracting core scientific questions from real-world clinical practice to ensure our fundamental research directly impacts patient care.

-Collaborative Innovation: By breaking down traditional barriers between basic and clinical sciences, we foster a cross-institutional, interdisciplinary network that leverages shared resources and complementary expertise.

-Technology-Driven: We harness cutting-edge technological breakthroughs and interdisciplinary approaches to accelerate the translation of scientific findings into clinical applications.

An Integrated Research-Clinical Ecosystem

We maintain strong, strategic alliances with leading medical institutions. Our multi-level, regular collaborations span numerous prestigious tertiary hospitals in Shanghai, including Zhongshan Hospital, Ruijin Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Renji Hospital, Changzheng Hospital, Shanghai General Hospital, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, and Huadong Hospital. Together, we have formed dozens of joint research groups, achieving coordinated development in talent cultivation, scientific discovery, technological innovation, and clinical translation.

A distinctive "ShanghaiTech Scientist–Clinical Specialist" pairing mechanism has been established, creating a bidirectional "bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench" research model. Through joint research projects and postgraduate training programs, we are continuously cultivating a new generation of interdisciplinary medical researchers.

We have also launched a Coordinated Innovation Platform for Clinical Research and Translational Medicine, making our resources openly available to research and medical institutions across Shanghai and the rest of China. Through multi-level academic exchanges and resource integration, we are steadily enhancing our research capacity and academic influence, with the goal of building an internationally recognized collaborative network.

State-of-the-Art Smart Laboratory Facilities

Spanning approximately 4,000 square meters of modern laboratory space, our facilities house multiple research centers and ShanghaiTech research groups, with open access for partner hospital teams. Equipped with an advanced intelligent integrated management system linked via dedicated instrument terminals, the laboratory enables interconnection of instrument data and automated operations.

Rooted in interdisciplinary science, we integrate expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, genomics, and bioinformatics to establish a world-class public technology platform. Our core infrastructure includes over 60 large-scale research instruments valued at more than RMB 120 million, covering high-throughput third-generation genome sequencing, multi-scale biological imaging, high-end flow cytometry and cell sorting, and high-sensitivity molecular detection.

Our advanced laboratory environments and cutting-edge hardware provide researchers with an efficient and intelligent innovation hub, accelerating research timelines and expediting the clinical translation of scientific outputs.

Research Milestones

Over more than three years of development, the Laboratory has initiated hundreds of clinical research and translational projects, with a focus on oncology, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, and other critical areas. Our resident teams have received prestigious national and provincial-level recognitions, including the National Overseas High-level Talents Program, Key R&D Programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Pudong Pearl Leading Talent Program.

Our faculty has published nearly 300 high-quality papers in top-tier international journals such as Nature, Science, Cancer Cell, and Cell Stem Cell. We have jointly filed 17 invention patents with our partner hospitals, and three investigator-initiated clinical trials (IITs) have been successfully launched, providing robust momentum for the high-quality development of clinical research and the biomedical industry.

Future Outlook

Guided by the philosophy of "Innovation, Collaboration, Openness and Sharing," the Laboratory will further deepen the integration of medical practice and research. We aim to attract world-leading medical talent and tackle more critical disease challenges, ultimately establishing ourselves as a world-class hub for clinical translational research—delivering strong scientific and technological support for the national Healthy China Strategy.
